My name is Ben Owens. I’m a journalist, a producer, and the host of Listen for the Lie, an acclaimed true-crime podcast where we uncover all the lies that people tell.

In our first season, my assistant and I helped crack a baffling cold case in South Carolina. But the show isn’t about us — it’s about the truth. And this season, we’re traveling to a tight-knit community in Texas to investigate the unsolved murder of Savannah Harper.

Season 2

Who Killed Savannah Harper?

Plumpton is a quaint town in Texas Hill Country, home to about 15,000 people, and a popular spot for young couples looking to escape the big city. It’s a pleasant place, a safe place. Bad things aren’t supposed to happen here. But sometimes, they do.

Five years ago, someone brutally murdered 24-year-old Savannah Harper. Lucy Chase, Savannah’s close friend, was found an hour after the discovery of Savannah’s body, injured and wandering along a two-lane country road with her clothes soaked in Savannah’s blood. At first, Lucy was considered another victim in the attack. As new details emerged, however, people began to talk — and that narrative changed.

Lucy maintains she has no memory of that horrible night. Police never found enough evidence to arrest her, and officially Savannah’s murder remains unsolved. But plenty of folks in Plumpton still doubt Lucy’s defense. In fact, quite a few locals are certain that she’s a liar and a murderer.

Is it true that no one believes Lucy Chase? Is she hiding something, or have the people of Plumpton accused an innocent woman of murder for five years? Let’s find out.

S2: Episode One

“The sweetest Girl you ever Met”

“She got away with murder, and everyone knows it.” —Maya Harper, Savannah’s sister In the first episode of Listen for the Lie, I travel to Plumpton, Texas, to kick off my investigation into the unsolved murder of Savannah Harper. Locals have plenty to say about what happened in their town five years ago — including Maya Harper, Savannah’s younger sister, who’s convinced that Lucy Chase got away with murder.

S2: Episode Two

“She Would not Hesitate to Cut a Bitch”

My investigation continues. In this episode, I speak to Lucy’s old friends, former classmates, and the people she grew up with. Everyone, it seems, has something to share, and troubling themes emerge.

S2: Episode Three

“Matt was too Good for her”

In this episode, I delve into Lucy’s rocky past relationships. I also speak with Colin Dunn, who had been dating Savannah in the final months before her death. When our conversation turns to the night of the murder, Colin discloses a shocking secret.

S2: Episode Four

“The Amnesia Defense”

In this episode, I look into Lucy’s whereabouts on the night of the murder and examine the so-called “amnesia defense” element of her alibi. Is it possible that she truly can’t remember what happened? The answer may surprise you.
