Celadon Books Acquires Non-Fiction Book About the Importance of Listening

Celadon Books is pleased to announce our latest acquisition, YOU’RE NOT LISTENING by Kate Murphy. Upon reading the manuscript, Executive Editor Ryan Doherty knew this illuminating book about the power of listening would be a timely and culturally relevant addition to the Celadon list. He acquired the rights from Bridget Matzie at Aevitas Creative Management.

New York Times contributor Kate Murphy asked people on five continents about who truly listened to them; most struggled to come up with a response. Despite living in a world where technology allows constant digital communication and opportunities to connect, it seemed no one was really listening or even knew how.

In this deep dive, Kate explains why we’re not listening, what it’s doing to us, and how we can reverse the trend. She makes accessible the psychology, neuroscience, and sociology of listening, while also introducing us to some of the best listeners out there (including a CIA agent, focus-group moderator, bartender, radio producer, and top furniture salesman).

"YOU’RE NOT LISTENING is an important and eye-opening book that has the ability to change the way people interact, work, and live,” says Ryan. “Even in its very first draft, Kate’s observations deeply impacted my life, and every person that has read it has come to me to tell me how it has changed them."

Kate Murphy is a Houston, TX-based reporter whose writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Economist, Agence France-Presse, and Texas Monthly.

YOU’RE NOT LISTENING will publish in January 2020.
