Celadon Books Pre-empts Adorable Pet Detective Book by Colin Butcher

Celadon Books acquired MOLLY, THE PET DETECTIVE by Colin Butcher in March of 2018. Upon reading about Colin’s journeys with his adorable Cocker Spaniel named Molly, Senior Vice President and Co-Publisher Deb Futter immediately shared the proposal with everyone at Celadon. With the team firmly on board, Deb preempted the book by making an offer to John Maas from Sterling Lord Literistic before the project went to auction.

A longtime police officer, Colin Butcher left the force in 2005 to start his own private detective agency, specializing in helping reunite people with their lost pets. Despite hundreds of successes, there were still heartbreaking cases where Colin couldn’t find the missing on his own. He needed a partner. Enter Molly, a willful, wayward, and stubborn Cocker Spaniel rescued and adopted by Colin. Together, they are the man-and-dog team behind UKPD, United Kingdom Pet Detectives.

Trained by the same elite dog whisperers who train police dogs, Molly is an expert in the art of finding lost animals—especially cats, who are uniquely skilled at eluding humans. Molly’s many success stories include Pablo, a ginger tomcat who had been kidnapped in a sleepy Devonian village; Chester, a fifteen-year-old missing tabby who vanished in the garden outside his home; a barge cat, Penny, who went missing from the boat she called home on the River Thames; and many more.

“Colin and Molly’s efforts are simply heartwarming,” says Deb. “It’s a pleasure to help share the story of how they found each other and became this incredible team.”

Colin Butcher is the Company Director and Chief Investigator of the UKPD. Previously a Detective Inspector in Surrey Police, and a veteran of the Royal Navy, Colin was awarded a prestigious Chief Constables Commendation for his contributions to the advancement of the Criminal Investigation Department. He has been recovering stolen and missing pets for over twenty years and has a wealth of experience in the investigation of pet crime. His first successful assignment was back in 1994 when, serving as a Detective Sergeant with Surrey Police, he recovered two German Shepherd puppies stolen from a breeder's kennels.

MOLLY, THE PET DETECTIVE will publish in the fall of 2019. A young reader’s edition will publish from Feiwel and Friends, an imprint of Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group, the following winter.
